A placebo is any treatment that has no active properties, such as a sugar pill. There are many clinical trials where a person who has taken the placebo instead of the active treatment has reported an improvement in symptoms. Belief in a treatment may be enough to change the course of a person's physical illness.


Even though a placebo has no active ingredients to cause a positive effect, it can still make a patient feel better, 


A beneficial effect produced by a placebo drug or treatment, which cannot be attributed to the properties of the placebo itself, and must therefore be due to the patient's belief in that treatment.

About 72% of physicians were found to be prescribing placebos. Vitamins were the most commonly prescribed placebos. Pure placebos were prescribed by 69.4% and impure placebos by 83.9% of physicians.


A placebo is used in clinical trials to test the effectiveness of treatments and is most often used in drug studies. For instance, people in one group get the actual drug, while the others receive an inactive drug, or placebo.


One group took a migraine drug labeled with the drug's name, another took a placebo labeled "placebo," and a third group took nothing. The researchers discovered that the placebo was 50% as effective as the real drug to reduce pain after a migraine attack.
