SPINAL CORD

 SPINAL CORD (BACKBONE)

     ******

The spinal cord is a long, tube-like band of tissue.

The mass of nerves inside the spine that connects all parts of the body to the brain

It connects your brain to your lower back. Your spinal cord carries nerve signals from your brain to your body and vice versa. These nerve signals help you feel sensations and move your body.

The spinal cord is a group of nerves that serves as a messaging center between the brain and parts of the body,

Like the brain, the spinal cord consists of gray and white matter. The butterfly-shaped center of the cord consists of gray matter. The front wings (usually called anterior or ventral horns) contain motor nerve cells (neurons), which transmit information from the brain or spinal cord to muscles, stimulating movement.

The spinal cord lies inside the spinal column, which is made up of 33 bones called vertebrae. Five vertebrae are fused together to form the sacrum (part of the pelvis), and four small vertebrae are fused together to form the coccyx (tailbone).

The average person is born with 33 individual bones (the vertebrae) that interact and connect with each other through flexible joints called facets.

Roles of the spine

            ****

• Protect your spinal cord and surrounding structures. This is probably the most important the spinal vertebrae play in the body. ...

• Provide the foundation for your posture. Without your spinal bones, you would not be able to stand upright. ...

• Enable you to move and bend.

The backbone or the spinal column is the central axis of the skeleton in all vertebrates.

Spinal cord problems

            *******

Spinal cord disorders can originate from either outside or inside the spinal cord. Damage from the outside of the cord is caused by compression of the spinal cord or injury. The spinal cord may be compressed due to a bone fracture, spinal degeneration, or abnormalities, such as a hematoma, tumor or herniated disk.

The two main types of injuries to the spinal bones (vertebrae) are fractures and dislocations. A fracture is a break to any part of the vertebrae. A dislocation is when the vertebrae do not line up correctly or are out of place. These may cause damage to the spinal cord.

Common symptoms include: Abnormally rounded shoulders or back. Back or neck pain that can be sharp and stabbing, dull and aching, or burning.

FLUID IN THE SPINE

        *******

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF is made by tissue that lines the ventricles (hollow spaces) in the brain. It flows in and around the brain and spinal cord to help cushion them from injury and provide nutrients.

CSF is derived from blood plasma and is largely similar to it, except that CSF is nearly protein-free compared with plasma and has some different electrolyte levels. Due to the way it is produced, CSF has a higher chloride level than plasma, and an equivalent sodium level.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a clear, colorless, watery fluid that flows in and around your brain and spinal cord. Your brain and spinal cord make up your central nervous system. It controls and coordinates everything you do, including your ability to move, breathe, see think, and more.

SYMPTOMS OF LESS FLUID  IN SPINE

    **********

• Muscle weakness and wasting (atrophy)

• Loss of reflexes.

• Loss of sensitivity to pain and temperature.

• Headaches.

• Stiffness in your back, shoulders, arms and legs.

• Pain in your neck, arms and back.

• Spinal curvature
