WHAT IS WAX COATING

                WHAT IS WAX

                       *****

A  substance that is secreted by bees and is used by them for constructing the honeycomb, that is a dull yellow solid plastic when warm, and that is composed of a mixture of esters, cerotic acid, and hydrocarbons. called also beeswax.

A wax is a simple lipid which is an ester of a long-chain alcohol and a fatty acid. The alcohol may contain from 12-32 carbon atoms. Waxes are found in nature as coatings on leaves and stems.

Waxes are a diverse class of organic compounds that are lipophilic, malleable solids near ambient temperatures. They include higher alkanes and lipids, typically with melting points above about 40 °C (104 °F), melting to give low viscosity liquids.

             FUNCTION

                    ****

Their strongly hydrophobic nature allows them to function as water repellents on the leaves of some plants, on feathers, and on the cuticles of certain insects. Waxes also serve as energy-storage substances in plankton (microscopic aquatic plants and animals) and in higher members of the aquatic food chain.

TYPE OF WAX

• Soft wax. Soft wax, also known as strip waxing, is used by spreading a thin layer of the warm body wax on top of the skin. ...

• Hard wax. ...

• Fruit wax. ...

• Chocolate wax. ...

• Sugar wax

Wax is effective in polishing, water repellency, antifouling, mold release, and dispersion. It is used in a variety of applications, from cosmetics and daily necessities such as crayons, candles and car waxes, to industrial products such as paints, inks, adhesives, and tyres.

most candles are made from paraffin wax, a byproduct of petroleum refining. Candles can also be made from microcrystalline wax, beeswax.

About 90 percent of the wax used for commercial purposes is recovered from petroleum by dewaxing lubricating-oil stocks. Petroleum wax is generally classified into three principal types: paraffin (see paraffin wax), microcrystalline, and petrolatum. Paraffin is widely used in candles, crayons, and industrial polishes.

Paraffin wax is a by-product of heating or distilling petroleum, also known as crude oil

Gel wax is a type of wax that is used in candles and wax melts.

soy, palm, bees, carnauba, fats and more. Natural waxes come in a variety of colors and odors.

All waxes contain fats or oils. Most wax averages to about 86% the density of water, or a specific gravity of 0.86.

FRUIT WAX

   ******

Artificial wax coating is applied to fruits and vegetables to increase their shelf life. Are all food waxes harmful

Extra-glossy fruits and shiny vegetables often greet you when you venture out for grocery-shopping. By now, many people are aware that the shine comes from artificial wax coating that is applied on fruits and veggies to improve their appearance and increase their shelf life. It is natural for one to be concerned about the adverse effect of such waxes on our health.

Fruit waxing is the process of covering fruits (and, in some cases, vegetables) with artificial waxing material. Natural wax is removed first, usually by washing, followed by a coating of a biological or petroleum derived wax. Potentially allergenic proteins (peanut, soy, dairy, wheat) may be combined with shellac.

Waxing of fruit is the process of applying a thin layer of edible wax to the outer surface of the product. It can be done in several different ways, ranging from manual rubbing of the product surface, dipping or submergence in wax, to automated roller brush application.
