While buying mangoes, put the mangoes in a bucket of water and see which mangoes are sinking ,                            And the one that sinks to the base is naturally ripened. This is because naturally ripened mangoes weigh more and are juicier.


 And which are on the surface of water. Mangoes that sink in water are naturally ripe. But if you see any mango floating on top, then understand that it has been cooked with chemicals.The one that floats is artificially ripened.

Calcium carbide is used for the ripening of mangoes.

Ethylene gas, acetylene gas liberated from calcium carbide, and ethephon.


Ethylene gas is the natural gas used to ripen mangoes. Placing an unripe mango in a paper bag will cause the mango to release ethylene naturally, helping it to ripen.

An artificially ripened mango will have no juice or very little juice inside. An organic mango, on the other hand, will have a lot of natural juice. This is one of the major indicators of checking out mangoes.


Avoid mangoes that have black and brown spots.

FSSAI has prohibited the use of calcium carbide.

The use of this chemical for the ripening of fruits is banned in India.

Calcium Carbide can irritate the skin causing a rash, redness and burning feeling on contact. permanent damage (corneal opacities). exposures may cause a build-up of fluid in the lungs.

Calcium carbide treatment of food is extremely hazardous because it contains traces of arsenic and phosphorous. Once dissolved in water, the carbide produces acetylene gas. Acetylene gas may affect the neurological system by inducing prolonged hypoxia.


Consumption of calcium carbide ripened mangoes affect the neurological system, cause headache, dizziness, mood disturbances, sleepiness, mental confusion, memory loss, cerebral oedema and seizures.
